Ljubljana

Ljubljana is the capital of a state, but it is small and pretty, easy to get around, and full of surprises. While during winter it is its dreamy central European character that prevails, during summer it has a relaxed Mediterranean feel to it. It is remarkable for its rich tradition, youthful vibrancy, cultural creativity, feel for entertainment, and numerous green spaces. Uniqueness wherever you turn Ljubljana has preserved evidence of all the five millennia of its history, including, among others, the remains of the Roman city of Emona and the old city centre with its medieval castle and beautiful buildings with Baroque façades, decorative portals and uneven roofs. Other significant bits in the mosaic of Ljubljana are its picturesque bridges across the river Ljubljanica and its vast Tivoli park, stretching into the very city centre.

In the second half of the 20th century, it was the world famous architect Jože Plečnik that put an indelible personal stamp on his native city, and the so called Plečnik's Ljubljana ranks among the 20th century's most prominent total works of art. Ljubljana's appearance was further shaped by Plečnik's pupils and a whole new wave of renowned young Slovenian architects. Ljubljana is a vibrant centre of creativity where cultural activity has become a way of life. It boasts one of the world's oldest philharmonics. Each year it host more than 10,000 cultural events, from prestigious music, theatre and art events to those pertaining to alternative and avant-garde culture.

Ljubljana's surrounding areas, packed with natural beauty and cultural sights bearing witness to the city's dynamic history, are well known for their walking, hiking and cycle trails and traditional culinary delights. As distances within Slovenia are short, Ljubljana is a perfect base for exploring Slovenia's diverse beauty. Within a single day you can visit the coast and high mountains and experience the Mediterranean, Alpine and continental climate.

We would like to point out some sights, which are must-see, once you are in Ljubljana!

Kamnik

There are many cities in the world distinguished for their size, importance, location, beauties, and history. To compare Kamnik with any of these is a difficult task since Kamnik is a small city standing on the banks of the Bistrica River, where the patina of the roofs, church steeples, and castle ruins merges with the green neighbouring high hills and plains, and its margins with the chain of the Kamniške Alps. These are the components that give the city its soul and bear witness to the rich history of the small nation that succeeded in preserving its language and culture at the meeting point of Romance, Germanic, and Hungarian influences. Kamnik lived and still lives at a crossroads, which enables it to remain an important piece in the mosaic of our country.

Škofja Loka

Old town core is consisted from Upper - Town square called Plac and Lower square called Lontrg both dominated by the Castle of Škofja Loka which bids the visitors welcome at the entrance to the town. It must have been built before the year 1202 because it was described as very firm in the document from the same year. The castle was built by the bishops of Freising and it was the place of administrator of the Loka dominion and of the granary-administrator. It was also lodging for the bishop when he was on leave. The Castle was almost totally demolished in the earthquake in 1511 but it was restored by the bishop Filip. There stood once mighty square tower in the Castle’s courtyard, which ground plan’s sizes are still preserved and restored. Nowadays there is Museum in the Castle, entertainments are held in Castle church and marriages are possible in the Castle, too.
